Bistrot Zinc

WHAT: Bistrot Zinc
WHERE: 1131 N. State St.

OUR RATING: Do It!

As we slowly make our way around the French restaurants of Chicago, the innumerable “bistrots”, “cafés” and “des restaurants” soon seem to blur into one another, all with similar decor and dishes. That’s why Bistrot Zinc is such a nice change. With a emblazoned storefront set in red and black, but an interior that speaks more to the French farmhouse than the Parisian bistro, with tile floors, tin ceilings and a handcrafted zinc bar, this Gold Coast restaurant is in a swanky neighborhood, producing good, authentic cuisine at middling prices.

Adam: When I entered Bistrot Zinc, I knew I had made the right choice. Friendly and helpful wait-staff, brilliant decor and a simple, yet satisfying menu mark this establishment out as one of the better deals in the Gold Coast. Famous for its zinc-topped bar, I was coming for the food rather than the libations, but I’m assured that their wine selection is rather good.

Sitting facing the windows (which are opened on a warm summer’s day), I perused a menu replete with escargot, moule marinières, and onion soup, but it was the Foie de Veau that caught my attention. It goes without saying that the preparation of a good calf’s liver is the mark of a successful French restaurant, and I am pleased to report that Bistrot Zinc does it right. Sauteed calf’s liver comes topped with fried onions and seated upon a bed of crème fraîche mashed potatoes slathered in port sauce. Bacon can also be added.

The first thing to notice about BZs liver is the thickness. Generally, veal liver is served ultra-thin, but BZ manages to pull off a thicker cut, without any of the odd grainy textures less experienced chefs seem to produce. Perhaps the most delicious aspect of the meal is the port sauce, which accentuated the “Frenchness” of the whole affair. I would have appreciated the addition of mushrooms or green beans sometimes seen elsewhere, but I was impressed enough with BZ’s liver to be able to fully recommend it to you as a delightful dish.

Alicia: Je voudrais…vol-au-vent! Vol-au-vent, French for “flight in the wind” is usually a small hollow puff pastry filled with either a savory or sweet filling. Invented by pastry-chef Antonin Carême in the early 1800’s, the vol-au-vent pastry is usually all about the pastry, more than the filling, but at Bistrot Zinc it’s really the stew of the day that is highlighted in all its meaty goodness. Bistrot Zinc’s vol-au-vent is made up of their stew du jour, which can be anything from chicken to lamb to veal, a heaping pile of their crème fraîche mashed potatoes, and two crispy discs of puff pastry.

When our waiter informed us that the stew of the day was veal, I jumped right on ordering the catchy-sounding dish. I was pleasantly surprised in the balance of the dish favoring the stew, rather than the pastry, with a healthy dose of cooked celery and carrots in a tomato-based broth. The pastry was light and airy but also crispy, and yet offered another taste and texture altogether once smothered in the stew. And the stew itself was a complex and savory tour of delicate melt-in-your-mouth veal and crushed tomatoes. The mashed potatoes lent yet another layer, with plenty of herby creaminess. And, of course, the highlight of the evening was when I used their amazingly crispy slices of French bread to soak up the last remnants of my dish.

Final Thoughts: Bistrot Zinc brings the flavor and bright sunny feeling of a classic French bistro without the stuffiness you might find in good ol’ France. And with a healthy sized menu and generous portions, you’ll definitely go home with a full stomach and some satisfied taste buds.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

WHAT: Sprinkles Cupcakes (ATM)
WHERE: 50 E. Walton St.

OUR RATING: Chance It!

(sprinkles.com)

Sprinkles Cupcakes is not actually a Chicago native, but a California immigrant who arrived on the scene a little while ago. What they didn’t really publicize was their newest nifty little method of cupcake delivery, which comes in the form of a 24-hour cupcake ATM outside their location in the Gold Coast. We love the futuristic, Japan-esque feel to the machine, as well as the super fast way they shoot out. But the cupcakes themselves leave quite a bit to be desired.

Adam: Sprinkles Cupcakes has a fantastic concept and the money to implement it. By creating the novelty of a vending machine imbedded in a wall (their “ATM”), Sprinkles manages to attract a line at 11:40pm that fills their entire entranceway. The excited energy that surrounds the event of dispensation mirrors that of some fad item that everyone has to try.

When I arrived at the machine, I must admit, it was pretty damn cool. Rows of beautifully boxed cupcakes line the glassed off case covered with a pink metal lattice. An LCD touch screen flashes welcomingly at you, as you make your selection and pay by card (no cash option available). At this moment, the cupcake whizzes out and down a chute (filmed and relayed to the screen, of course) and you are ready to enjoy. A fairly excellent adventure in futurism.

But, the cupcakes themselves are so very saddening. For example, my Red Velvet, which they assure you would have an “upped…chocolate quotient” and a “rich cream cheese frosting”, wasn’t particularly more chocolatey than any other red velvet I’ve had, nor was the frosting that creamy.

Alicia: While standing in line for the cupcake machine late on a Saturday night, I was sure the ATM would be out of both of the flavors we wanted, as Red Velvet is their most popular cupcake and Irish Chocolate is their special from March 1 – 17. I was super excited, however, when we were able to snag both, and get in on a scrumptious baked goods at a time of day I usually crave them the most, but when most shops are closed.

Picture 21When I opened the cute box for my Irish Chocolate cupcake, I was greeted by a large green shamrock. What was it topping? Belgian dark chocolate cake topped with Bailey’s Irish Cream Cheese. Then for the main event: I pulled the cupcake apart and made sure I had all the flavors together and popped it in my mouth. Moist cake…and some frosting. Not very Belgian Dark, and not very Bailey’s or cream cheesey. Kind of just chocolate cake and frosting. There was some hint of some kind of liquor in there, more likely whiskey, but that was super faint.

Final thoughts: A great concept, a fun delivery method and a beautiful presentation, but ultimately, the cupcakes just don’t take the cake, especially for the price tag. On the small side for the price ($4 for a special and $3.50 for a regular), seemingly regular tasting and not always what’s promised, Sprinkles doesn’t really hold a candle to Molly’s or Crumbs, both of which provide bigger, tastier, more moist and creamier deliciousness. Therefore, our evaluation is this: Sprinkles spent a lot on the machine, but the cupcakes are normal and not quite worth it. Perhaps go once, just to try a new flavor, but forget it after that.

Forever Yogurt’s Froth (Hot Chocolate)

OUR RATING: Do it!

Feeling the cold and (upcoming) snow this winter? Need a moment to relax, rejuvenate and warm up? Look no further than Forever Yogurt Froth Hot Chocolate station at the store’s Lakeview location on Belmont. We love this location generally, as it is perfectly designed to mimic the interior of a CTA underground carriage, seats and all. Not too glamorous you say (we know, the CTA is rather terrible lately), but somehow it works. Froth stations are also available at Forever Yogurts in Wicker Park (1924 W. North Ave.) and the Gold Coast (42 E. Chicago Ave.).

Friendly staff will give you a wide range of options for your Froth Hot Chocolate, including the Steam Engine with Hershey’s chocolate, the Cliffhanger with Andes mint and PB Confidential with Reese’s peanut butter cups. The fun names are just half of it.

The quality of the hot chocolate is superb. You won’t see any hot chocolate powder mix or flavoured syrups here. Your steamy cup of hot chocolate is made with the pure melted chocolate of your choice along with either whole, two percent, soy or skim milk. After we ordered our chosen manner of death-by-chocolate, we took a seat as the staff created our drinks.

Froth topping station

Once our cocoa was mixed and melted into our generous-sized cups, we took a trip to the topping station. If we were overwhelmed with the chocolate choices before, the toppings just blew our world. Toppings included different types of candy including reese’s pieces and butterfingers, nuts, marshmallows, various spices, and chocolate and caramel syrups. Our only disappointment was the distinct lack of whipped cream, which we hear is present at other locations. Perhaps they will order it in soon.

Hazelnut Boulevard & Abuelita hot chocolates

Hazelnut Boulevard & Abuelita hot chocolates

Adam ordered the Hazelnut Boulevard with Nutella, topped it off with marshmallows, cinnamon and even salt! Meanwhile, Alicia ordered the Abuelita Mexican hot chocolate and topped it with cayenne pepper, cinnamon, sea salt and a healthy dose of marshmallows. We settled down to a pleasant sipping that the CTA certainly wouldn’t allow on its carriages. All we can say is that the Mayans would be super stoked to imbibe these sweet treats!
