Beer Day

Today’s post is nontraditional, but we couldn’t resist, given that in 1989 on this day Iceland repealed its prohibition on alcohol and Beer Day was born (Icelandic is a awesome language, so some key words are translated below). So, as we look back over our beer loves and hates of the last month, we tell you which brews are do’s and which are dont’s.

Have fun picking some of these up for your own Beer Day celebration, and send us your pics!

The Do’s:

Blue Moon
Belgian White Wheat Ale

While it might be predictable, one should definitely enjoy Blue Moon’s Belgian White Wheat Ale more often than the saying would suggest. With a cloudy gold colour, minimal head and moderate carbonation, this wheat ale (öl) actually captures the traditional Belgian brews of Antwerp quite well. A faint, sweet aroma can be appreciated when the glass is first raised to your lips, while aromatic orange (appelsínugulur) notes complete the drink. While we prefer it draught with an orange slice (try to make it Valencia), it’s perfect chilled and one of the quintessential springtime ales.

Hopothesis
IPA (Indverskt föl öl)

There’s nothing quite like an IPA, and Hopothesis’ new brew, with a light head and amber colour, medium carbonation and mellow bitter nose, present one of the most Indian-style Pale Ales we’ve tried in a long time. Complete with a nutty aftertaste that is unique to this brand, Hopothesis sets the bar high and achieves with this fantastic ale. Recommended with hearty ethnic food and American favourites: here’s hoping for an Indian Summer.

Liefmans
Cuvee Brut

Strange beers are fun, and we think with all the ice in Iceland (well, we know that Greenland is actually the icey one, but what the heck), they would just love a fruit beer, given that one usually eats only elk up there (this might be an exaggeration, we’re not sure). This one’s from Belgium and consists of a Flemish brown ale aged for 18 months along with whole cherries (kirsuber). The rich malt base and the slightly sweet and sour flavor make you quite confused about whether this is a wine (vín), beer (bjór) or spirit (andi), but the bittersweet nose along with moderate carbonation leave you in no doubt: it’s a beer, a beer worthy of the anti-prohibitionists and good enough to keep you warm for the remainder of the snow season (snjór árstíð).

The Don’ts:

Hard Cider: Apple Ginger (Erfitt Eplasafi: Epli Engifer)

Springtime is not the traditional time for cider, and perhaps that’s why this light gold little number didn’t really work out. Autumn would have been a better time for this headless, moderately carbonated beverage with a juice-like aroma, that reminds one more of a Juicy Juice than any type of cider. Marketed as apple ginger, it features zero ginger notes and no sharp taste, seemingly pear-like (pera-eins) in its flavoring. Go for a cloudy, traditional, still harder cider in the future, and steer clear of this “100% Kids” drink.

Amber #5

If your beer (bjór) palate has not really matured since college, you’re going to love this one. Reputedly an amber ale, this beer comes complete with no head and a malty, light flavour, reminiscent of a Miller High Life. Completely normal, but not quite the junk fraternities spew out, we wouldn’t recommend this amber ale for the money it costs. Then again, perhaps we’re too sophisticated over here.

Robust Porter

Apart from having a deeply unattractive name, Smuttynose lets you down on another front as well: the artwork. It’s actually beautiful, but it seems to be one of those many breweries that puts far too much money into a graphic designer and much less into the beer it is making. A black beer (svartur bjór) with light head and a malty, bitter smell, it is actually not that unpalatable, yet its dark taste lacks the complexity of more notable porters. Medium carbonation does do the product much service, and we can imagine such a concoction being served in Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop, but not many other places.

The Maybe’s

Vanilla Porter Ale

We weren’t sure where to place this one, so we’ll let you decide. Dark reddish in colour with moderate head and a bitter, vanilla caramel (vanillu karamellu) nose, it had minimal carbonation and the flavour of a milk stout (mjólk digri). In fact, this beer is less bitter than most porters and has a pleasant, smoky aftertaste, but perhaps lacks the fullness in flavour that would merit buying it on its own. Good in a variety pack, but make sure you have a good alternative, as this beer is just not unique enough for us.

Duvel Moortgat Brewery
Duvel

This strong golden ale is a Belgian standard. Fairly simple and lacking in the complex flavors of other Belgian beers, Duvel nonetheless provides a solid imported beer for the globetrotters of drinking. Primarily a pilsner-based ale, it also has herb (jurt) and citrus (sítrus) notes, with a nice amount of carbonation. If you’re not comfortable ordering European beers yet, this is a good starting point.

Maredsous
Triple (þrefaldur)

Maredsous is primarily an awesome beer because of its backstory, rather than content. Brewed by monks of the Maredsous Abbey of Denée in Belgium, it seems more like a novelty than a beer, and we can imagine this Friar Tuck’s having a bit too much of their own ale for our amusement. A tripel (although they spell it “Triple” on the label), it’s rather strong with a sweet caramel malt and slight bitterness. Hints of earth (jörð), grass (gras) and anise (anís) shine through, although we believe one would be better set with a less well-known abbey ale than this mass produced version.

You can’t go too much more American than at Public House Chicago, where contemporary American cuisine mashes with the flavors of a smokehouse and plenty of beer. Brought to you by the same folks who run sister bar Bull and Bear, not only do they have 25 beers on tap, but they include beer in many of their dishes and even some of their sauces, and it’s no surprise their small claim to fame is their beer tasting and pairing menu.

Quite honestly, this place is very much your average Near North Side sports bar, attempting to match the trendiness of the area with higher priced semi-gastropub food.

That’s not to say that Executive Chef David Blonsky’s food doesn’t taste fantastic. We tried two of his flatbreads at a special event there, the Wild Mushroom (goat cheese, caramelized onion, fresh spinach, white truffle) and the Mediterranean (lamb merguez sausage, roasted garlic hummus, roasted cherry tomatoes, la clare farm evalon cheese, shaved red onion, house made tzatziki). Their decadence was all too apparent from the above ingredients, but we don’t feel they are anything special, and dressing standard food in fancy flavors doesn’t equal good food automatically.

$16 for a relatively petite flatbread is kind of high anyway, and the staff here aren’t the friendliest. The female bartender was ambivalent, and when we asked the male bartender what company produced the wine, he hesitatingly told us, shrugged, and then stated, “I don’t really know, don’t care.” Hmm.

Their draft beer selection is quite admirable, however, and although they only have a single white and red wine available, La Terre is definitely a good call. Although we didn’t take a seat at one of their booths, we noticed that they had two beer taps and one customizable liquor tap at each of them, which is definitely fun when going with a small group of friends (we’ve seen this design elsewhere and it seems to be the “in” thing right now). The most unique feature of the place is their “Walltender,” taps inside little alcoves in the wall where you swipe your credit card and pour yourself another draft. These guys don’t cut you off.

The crowd here is definitely an after-work crowd, so if you’re in the area it might not be the worst place to drop in with a few of your co-workers.

But ultimately Public House Chicago is just average, and although they add pieces of character here and there and try to make their food sound special with the beer additives, there’s plenty of places in the area to patronize after you’re finished with the upscale pretense with its confused hustle and bustle.

As for the decor, it seemed a bit, well, all over the place. While most walls are decorated in a semi-rustic style, the wall at the far side of one room was a confused mess of cream and tan with random pictures frames scattered across it. Such a work would be more at home at the MCA, and even then it would be one of the more annoying pieces.

That being said, it does make for a nice, central location for a party or fundraiser, but, in all other respects, Public House Chicago is too normal to waste your time with it. Try a more eclectic locale in the future.

Picture 64Recently, Storefront City had the unique opportunity to attend the Chicago Reader’s 2nd Annual People Issue Party, honoring the 25 Chicagoans featured in this year’s People Issue and held at Vertigo Sky Lounge. We enjoyed complimentary cocktails from Tuaca, Korbel, Gentleman Jack and El Jimador, food from Benny’s Chop House, and music spun by DJ All the Way Kay. We loved the lounge so much in fact that we attended Fire & Ice, their relaunch of their ice bar, this past Friday.

Situated at the top of the Dana Hotel on the 26th floor of the Dana Hotel and Spa, Vertigo Sky Lounge is the only year-round, indoor/outdoor lounge in Chicago. Ready for this? They have an outdoor fire-pit and in the winter, the city’s only outdoor rooftop ice bar, 10-feet and 3,000 pounds of pure ice!

One of the major reasons Vertigo floats our boat is the total lack of a cover charge. You can literally just turn up, show your ID, check your coat downstairs (complimentary) and head on up to one of the sleekest experiences in the city. If you are visiting on a weekend, make sure you arrive early, as a line develops extremely quickly.

At this point, you have a choice: either squeeze into a space inside on one of the beautiful upholstered and plush window seats, grab a drink from one of Vertigo’s 3 indoor bars, or head out to the rooftop lounge, which is the highlight of this space. If you aren’t lucky enough to snag a free El Jimador margarita at an event, drinks will set you back $6-14 (since this is the city, that’s practically tuppence).

Bartenders are quick and polite, not making a fuss with preparation and being genial in every respect. Although we didn’t get a chance, you may also want to try some of their light bites: sushi, sliders and sharing platters make up the bulk of this menu. But this is nothing compared to the unparalleled outdoor space Vertigo offers if you’re courageous enough to brave the cold weather.

Festoon yourself in one of the lovely black terrycloth robes, a faux fur blanket or two, and amble onto the patio that, in this season, features a solid ice bar, ice sculptures and a roaring fire pit, stools included. You can even order flaming drinks at the ice bar, making a well-rounded fire and ice experience.

Also included are a selection of ice tables, which keep your drink cold while you stay toasty. It’s an entire new and magical world, a play land for adults in the middle of a Chicago winter. The whole setup reminds one of a scene from James Bond, so make sure you have your pithy remarks ready.

Another nice feature of this lounge are the bathrooms. They are kept immaculate and also include a chalkboard for you to write your comments on (yes, we left a message there).

So, if you are in the Gold Coast, drop in and have a martini or two while reminiscing about the last time you skied through the Alps after gambling with Goldfinger in Monte Carlo. Oh, and do make sure you are well dressed.

Buried treasure isn’t exactly what one is looking for in a city (although it’s always nice to find). The Map Room in Bucktown not only allowed us to uncover a full treasure chest’s of world beers, but also immerse ourselves in the experience of exploration, right down to the cartography on the walls and the National Geographics on the shelves.

With over 200 brands of beer and 36 brewing styles, The Map Room can seem a bit daunting. But, never fear, your trusty menu is here, and choosing anything from it is sure to land you on some far off tropical land, or at least on the galleon traveling there.

Lindemans Framboise (Horror) Dr. Jekyll would surely approve of this exceedingly sweet, raspberry lambic of a potion. If you’ve never had a fruit beer before, the experience could be overpowering. Yet, its sweetness lends to its uniqueness and, at $7, it is decently priced for such an exotic beer.

Arcadia Starboard Stout (Adventure) Pirates are known for their strong brews and lust for treasure. This little gem comes in a 20 oz glass for only $6, so you can save your own treasure and experience the seven seas. An oatmeal stout with dark, smooth notes, a hint of chocolate and a dry finish, Starboard Stout is a meal unto itself and fully fortifies you for a night of swashbuckling.

New Holland Dragon’s Milk (Fantasy) All we can say is Whoopi!  Dragon’s Milk might as well have come from the real thing, and its deep red colouring and oaky flavour are reminiscent of the perfumed aromas around King Arthur’s Round Table. Definitely worth your while even at the rather steep $7 for 10 oz. Since dragons are extinct, this is a bargain.

Despite a plethora of bottled beers on the wall, we highly suggest you go draft with their 26 taps, or try their cask-conditioned ale on handpump which rotates at least once a week. A note of import: the proper glass is always used for each style.

But if beer really isn’t your thing (even one of their gluten-free beers), their full-service bar also includes ciders, mead and the rest of the alcohol crew. The bar is cash only, so be sure to bring some bills.

For about $25 you can join fellow classmates and study a few beers, from what you’re tasting and smelling down to the ingredients and processes that are informing those very same flavors and aromas.

In the spirit of the season, we ventured to the centre of Chicago and explored the institution that is the Christkindlmarket. For those of you who don’t know, Christkindlmarket is a traditional German-American outdoor market that appears every year on the Daley Plaza in Downtown Chicago. Inspired by the Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany, which began in 1545, Chicago’s version of the market was first held in 1996, and has been held every year since. Bringing the European tradition of Christmas to the bitterly cold Midwest, such a market is not out of place in this wintery city.

Adam: As we wandered through the quaint little town of temporary stalls and heated cabins, one cannot help but be transported to the heart of Europe, full of traditions of all sorts, from the beers of Schonwald and the Gluhwein of Nuremberg, to the stollen of Dinkel’s Bakery (which Alicia insists we go back for, particularly the Pecan strudel the Chicagoist raves about), Chicago and onto the more exotic heights of Nepal and Ecuador for some warm native goods. You don’t have to be German or even Christian to appreciate the artistry of some of the products on offer here, with entire stores dedicated to holiday ornaments that vary from the everyday (reindeer and stars) to the slightly bizarre (hamburgers and fries). While prices are steep, with ornaments setting you back at least $5 for the smallest of pieces, enthusiasts will revel in the sheer variety and quality offered.

Some of the more notable vendors included Honey Bee Enterprises, selling a variety of bee-based goodies, Fehrenbach Family Cuckoo Clocks, Dinkel’s Bakery (slices of stollen or strudel at $3–a great deal!), Teagschwendner, and, of course, the numerous stalls wafting delicious scents our way.

Alicia: And who can travel their way through this German market without grabbing a boot full of glühwein (hot mulled wine) or cold German beer? We could, but that doesn’t mean you should. You might want to grab a pint to go with those steaming hot plates of sauerkraut you just can’t take your eyes off of.

For the little ones, staff hand out Christkind Crowns and Passport activity books everyday to provide some extra entertainment. Or, visit Santa’s House (Fri, Sat & Sun until Dec 23, and X-Mas Eve). Plus, you can’t miss the giant Christmas tree, perhaps the most spectacular focal point of the market.

Yes, everything is overpriced and just not quite up to par with my family’s German cooking, but it really does hit the spot and bring back memories of my Grandfather’s sauerkraut and weißwürste, and of the beautiful glass-blown and hand-carved wood ornaments we placed on the tree every Christmas when I was growing up. I go back to Christkindlmarket every year and it only serves to ignite my passion for my heritage and my family traditions.
